POLI 240 American Presidency
This course examines readings (both primary and secondary) on the American presidency, paying special attention to the historical and institutional development of the office. We will begin with the historic presidency, examining the constitutional foundations of the office, the development of the process of the presidential selection, and presidential leadership from Washington to Obama. After focusing on the major Presidents who build the presidency, helping to make the office what it is today, we will isolate the following aspects of the office, particularly with respect to congressional power: foreign policy making; the war power; the President's role as chief executive and administrative head; the veto power; executing privilege; and the power of the purse.
