OTA1020 Fundamental Skills for the OTA
This course serves as the first building blocks for the OTA's professional foundations, including the teaching/learning process and therapeutic use of self. Social and cultural influences will be explored as they affect practice in occupational therapy. Students will explore the use of occupation, purposeful activity and activity/task analysis as means for assessment and intervention with clients. Students will also demonstrate competencies in the assessment of vital statistics, biomechanical components, professional communication skills, patient/caregiver/family education, body mechanics, documentation and other skills important for practice in clinical settings. Methods and techniques for screening, assessing and evaluation for occupational therapy performance strengths and problems will be introduced. The course will also study human performance and growth in areas of occupation (social participation, ADL, education, work, play and leisure) throughout the life span.
