2021-22 Course Catalog

Associate of Science Degree

Overview

About the Program

The Associate of Science (AS) Degree at Marion Technical College is designed to be a cost-effective option for someone who is ultimately seeking a four-year degree. The AS degree includes the core curriculum that most Bachelor of Science programs require.

The Ohio Department of Higher Education has guaranteed that the AS degree will transfer to all of Ohio’s public colleges and universities. The purposes of this associate degree is to: (1) provide students with the opportunity to affordably complete the first two years of a bachelor’s degree; (2) enable students to transfer (often as a junior) to colleges and universities and earn a bachelor’s degree; (3) demonstrate to employers a student who successfully completed a degree program and possesses a well-rounded education.

The AS degree is a two-year liberal arts/general education degree comprised of courses that emphasize English, Mathematics, and the Natural Sciences. The AS also has components of the Social Sciences and the Arts/Humanities. Graduates of this program will have the general education necessary to pursue a bachelor’s degree at most four-year colleges and universities as juniors.

Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways

The Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways are designed to provide a clearer path to degree completion for students pursuing associate degrees who plan to transfer to an Ohio public university to complete their bachelor’s degree. OGTPs are essentially an agreement between public community colleges and universities confirming that all community college courses in the pathway meet specific major preparation requirements and will apply to the bachelor’s degree (students must still meet all university program admission requirements). A student who completes a major-specific OGTP will be eligible to earn an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science at Marion Technical College, and the completion of the OGTP will be recorded on the student’s transcript.

Marion Technical College currently offers Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways in Business, English, History, Psychology, and Social Work.
Students should work closely with their academic advisor to make sure they meet the requirements of the OGTP and their intended university to ensure a seamless transfer.
