ASL 1020 American Sign Language II

This course is a continuation of Beginning Sign Language and emphasizes receptive and expressive fluency and understanding of American Sign Language (ASL). ASL vocabulary, grammar and pragmatics are emphasized, and translation from English to ASL is discussed. Prerequisites: ASL 1010. (4 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Recognize and express the 1500 basic ASL signs from SPPA 2110 and expand upon this knowledge base by increasing sign vocabulary by a minimum of 500 additional ASL signs.

2. Apply ASL principles, linguistic features and grammatical structures including use of pronouns, role shifting, verb types and classifiers.

3. Use informational numbers including ages, money and time.

4. Converse, narrate and present in ASL.

5. Gain insight about Deaf Culture, Deaf history and the D/deaf community.

6. Demonstrate the basic principles behind translating from English to ASL.
