EDEL 2410 Elementary School Mathematics II

This course is designed to allow education students the opportunity to discuss and implement instructional strategies and activities for teaching math. It will provide a linkage between what prospective teachers study and how they will teach materials related to the course material they study. This course will be offered in conjunction with MATH 1105, Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers II. (1 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Develop materials and activities for teaching mathematics appropriately for the elementary students’ level of cognitive development.

2. Identify appropriate math standards for each lesson or concept using NCTM’s Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (2000), Focal Points for Prekindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics (2006), and Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (2010).

3. Demonstrate teaching strategies for concept presentation and development.

4. Develop a plan for accommodating individual differences when teaching math to elementary students.

5. Use appropriate math manipulatives to introduce and reinforce math concepts.

6. Reflect on teaching practices by summarizing articles from professional journals on teaching mathematics.

Competency of the above objectives will be evidenced, in part, through the process of keeping a math activities notebook; giving a brief math lesson presentation including ways of addressing individual differences; and discussing materials, activities and performance based outcomes in class.
