EDEC 4350 Health Management Issues in Early Education

The student will examine the implications of a child’s physical and mental health status on his/her personal, social, cognitive, language and motor development. The impact of development on quality of child and family life and educational progress is emphasized, working with young children, including young children with disabilities and their families, examples of family-centered, trans-disciplinary and relationship-based approaches to physical and mental health care and education intervention planning. Prerequisites: Completion of EDEC 1020, EDFD 2100, and PSYC 1000. (3 lect.)

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

Evaluate the impact of the child’s health status on development and educational progress.

Compare the roles of professionals from a variety of disciplines in child health care management.

Explain the specific, family-centered supports for promoting the physical and mental health of young children including, but not limited to, children with multiple and severe disabilities.

Describe the process of integrating physical and mental health care support within an educational program.

Demonstrate basic strategies for supporting positive emotional and social development in classroom and community care settings.

Create materials designed to teach others in the early childhood community about supporting mental health development.
