Outcomes
In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Demonstrate safe working habits in the pipe welding lab
2. Demonstrate the proper setup and breakdown of an oxyacetylene pipe cutting station.
3. Choose the right size cutting tip to cut and bevel 6 inch, 8 inch and 12 inch schedule 40 pipe.
4. Demonstrate the proper setup and use of manual pipe bevel cutting machines. Cutting a 35 degree bevels on 6 inch, 8 inch and 12 inch schedule 40 pipe.
5. Demonstrate the proper use of mathematical equations to make 6 inch, 8 inch and 12 inch branch patterns using the Pipe Fitters Blue Book and the 20th Century Methods of Pipe Fabrication and Layout for reference.
6. Transfer the branch patterns directly to the correct piece of pipe.
7. Demonstrate the proper cutting technique using an oxyacetylene hand torch to cut out the pipe layout.
8. Demonstrate safe use of angle grinders and end grinders while cleaning and prepping the pipe cuts.
9. Demonstrate the proper fitting techniques to assure a sound weld joint for making high quality welds on pipe.
10. Use a tape measure, carpenters square, hammer and center punch on structure steel fabrication.
11. Cut and bevel structure steel fabrication using the groove preparation shown on the blueprint, drawings.
12. Layout, cut out and fabricate a 4 x 4 x 3/8 carbon steel box maintaining close tolerances stated on the blueprint.
13. Layout, cut out and fabricate an 8 x 10 angle iron frame using 2 x 2 ¼ angle iron maintaining close tolerances stated on the blueprint, drawing.
14. Layout, cut out and fabricate a 4 inch channel iron "Fish Plate" using 3 x 3 ¼ inch channel iron. Student will maintain close tolerances stated on the blueprint , drawing
15. Layout, cut out and fabricate a 6 x 10 x ½ inch lifting eye. Student will maintain close tolerances stated on blueprint, drawing.
16. Layout, cut out and fabricate a 6 inch flange and blind flange using 8 x 3/8 flat bar, paying special attention to the fabrication notes on this blueprint for this particular project.
17. Layout, cut out and fabricate a coped out 6 x 8 inch I beam paying special attention to the fabrication notes on the blueprint, drawings.
18. Layout, cut out and fabricate an 8 inch "Bull Plug"
19. Layout, cut out an 8 inch "Orange Peel" pipe pattern.

Personal supplies provided by the welding student:
1. Safety glasses that meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z87.1 specification for safety glasses.
2. Welding Helmet with a number 10 shade welding lens.
3. Clear plastic cover lenses to protect the welding lens.
4. Oxyacetylene welding and cutting goggles with a number 5 shade lens.
5. Welding gloves and material handling gloves.
6. Leather welding sleeves or heavy denim work shirts and pants. NO POLYESTER.
7. Leather boots or shoes. NO TENNIS SHOES.
8. Suitable head covering (welding cap).
Tools required and provided by the welding student for this course:
1. Metal tool box at least 8 inches by 16 inches. 8 X 16.
2. 10 inch crescent wrench.
3. Channel Lock Pliers or slip joint pliers.
4. Vise grip pliers.
5. 12 inch combination square
6. 10 foot or 25 foot tape measure
7. Soap stone holder with soap stone or a metal marking pencil.
8. Oxyacetylene cutting tip cleaners.
9. Chipping hammer.
10. Nicholson pipe liner file.
11. Wooden handle wire brush.
12. Oxyacetylene torch lighter
13. Cutting Goggles with a #5 shade cutting lens
14. OSHA approved welding hood with a #10 shade welding lens.
