COSC 2025 Intermediate Linux

This is an intermediate course in the Linux operating system. This course provides the student with knowledge in the following areas: custom installation, system administration, shell programming, networking services, security, and troubleshooting. This course will help prepare the student for the Linux+ certification exam sponsored by CompTIA. Prerequisite: Previous experience with the Linux operating system is required or completion of COSC 2020. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Reinforce hardware knowledge

2. Perform typical and custom Linux installations

3. Install and recompile a Linux kernel

4. Perform system administration with user and group accounts

5. Create shell scripts to automate system tasks

6. Install and configure DNS and DHCP

7. Install and configure Samba, Apache, PHP, MySQL, and IPChains

8. Configure system security and data backup

9. Apply Linux patches and updates

10. Perform system troubleshooting

Instructor must have CompTIA Linux+ Certification Certification Exam Criteria: -One certification exam will be part of the course grade: CompTIA Linux+ -Your certification exam grade percentage will be based on the passing score of the exam. Scores below a passing exam score will be based on the percentage of points received out of the passing exam score. (A passing certification exam score will receive the total percentage for the certification exam.) -The first score that you receive on the certification exam will be used to determine your grade. No retake scores will be taken and used to calculate the final grade. -Students are responsible for reporting their certification exam scores. Each student must take a copy of the exam print out to the Commerce and Technology Division secretary in Main Hall 152 only. If you do not follow this, you will forfeit your certification exam scores and fail the course. -In the event a numerical score is not given for the certification exam, a written and hands-on challenge exam will be used to determine the grade for the certification exam.
