READ 314 Advanced Literacy Instruction

This course emphasizes the aspects of fluency; comprehension; and vocabulary acquisition as part of a balanced literacy school-based program. Students will study the components of fluency; instructional strategies for improving fluency; and related adaptive technology. Students will examine different types of text; levels of comprehension; and factors that contribute to deep comprehension; including identification of students motivational factors. Students will study the role and characteristics of direct and indirect (contextual) methods of vocabulary instruction and varied techniques for vocabulary instruction. The course will include various genres of literature and expository text to examine various literal; inferential; and evaluative comprehension strategies.
